Escaping Violence
In Ersekë Albania, lives a woman named Lefteri Mydinit who with only 12,000 lek a month from assistance must support herself and her young children. Struggling to meet basic needs such as clothing food, and wood to keep them warm during the cold winter months life has been hard for her. After experiencing 15 years of physical and psychological violence from her husband resulting in her becoming deaf from one ear and blind from one eye. She summed up this situation as “To endure violence for the sake of the children” all for them to have a father figure in their life.
However, life got even harder when her oldest child, her daughter got sick with a kidney disease. “Her father went to Greece to work and support the family; he sent 160 euros for our daughter. And the following year, he found another woman, and I have one in the legal process,” she revealed. After years of violence, she finally decided to file for divorce.
Currently, two of her children live with their mother and one child with their father.
“I feel sorry for the children, for nothing else. Nothing else, just for the children. I have two he has one. It breaks my heart to see my child with a kidney problem. There are days when I haven’t heard my daughters voice, I call her, but he doesn’t let her answer the phone. He hasn’t taken care of the boys either, he brings them two bags of chips. Children don’t want chips, they want to eat, and they want warmth” said Lefteri.
